Fall is coming

The time is coming to settle indoors.

End of summer

Here are shots of my corner of the exhibition at Aperture in June/July. The exhibition was a success and three of my prints went on to new homes. I hope they are happy there!

Also, my photograph of the owl totem in my community garden was featured in the Summer exhibition on the Lenscratch blog back on July 4. Lenscratch is a fantastic blog - the one photo blog I visit every day - and I was pleased to be a part of it.

We've had some great weather the past few weeks for photographing and I have a backlog of film to be developed. I'm looking forward to seeing the results soon.

Intersections exhibition January 21 - February 26 2011

Two of my photographs were selected for the Intersections exhibition opening at Zygote Press on January 21, 2011. The exhibition is a collaboration between Zygote and The Lit, pairing images with poetry. I'm intrigued by this idea as text is so important to my work - I'm curious to see what poems will accompany my photographs. I'm also pleased because this is the first time in a few years I have shown any work locally, which is my goal for this new year.

I've returned from my summer hiatus with many rolls of film to process.

Where I've been

This blog has been rather quiet as of late, but not for lack of activity on my part. I tend to work in cycles, and the summer/fall part of the year is when I focus on the outdoor aspect of my work - shooting film. I am very particular about the conditions in which I choose to make my images, and the warm weather is spent waiting for the perfect conditions to take the cameras out into the world. The rolls of film pile up in my studio usually until the snow falls, when I retreat indoors and spend the winter and spring processing the accumulated work.

This cycle reflects how I live my life in general. I am very interested in urban gardening and spend the summer tending to my vegetable gardens both at home and in my community plot. It is a great pleasure to pull out a bag of strawberries harvested by my own hands from the freezer in January, bringing a taste of warm weather and sunshine to the bleak days of winter.

As the days grow shorter, expect to see more activity here. Until then, you can find me harvesting herbs and freezing tomatoes.

Traveling Toy Camera Project complete

I recently participated in the Traveling Toy Camera Project, in which a Vivitar toycam is traveling to different photographers all over the world. Although I had the camera in my possession in March, I just posted the images to the blog today.

It was interesting to go back to shooting in a rectangular format, as I have become so used to shooting square. Because I was only able to keep the camera for a short time in order to get it to the next participant, I had to shoot my roll on a sunny day, which is not my preference. I'm still pretty pleased with the results, and I'd like to go back on a cloudy day to reshoot some of the scenes with my Holga. I believe some could fit into my series Novel quite nicely.

When I take a photo, my intention is not to simply document a place but rather to create an image that alters the viewer's perception and understanding of the place.

I love goats. This one has a phantom leg, which makes me love her even more.
